FitReaders 101: How Do I Join? (Answered!)
I get a version of this question in my inbox at least twice a month: “How do I actually join FitReaders?” So today I am putting together a proper FAQ post that I can point newcomers to. If you have been curious but a little intimidated, this is your friendly walkthrough. There is no signup form, no fees, no app to download, and absolutely no pressure to be at any particular fitness level. We mean it.
What Is FitReaders?
FitReaders is a very loose, very friendly online community of readers (mostly book bloggers and bookish folks on social media) who use bookish accountability to keep ourselves moving. We are not a fitness boot camp. We are a bunch of readers who like to cheer each other on for putting on our walking shoes, doing a yoga video, hitting the gym, gardening, swimming, dancing in the kitchen, or whatever else gets our bodies moving.
The “fit” in FitReaders is gentle. The “readers” part is the glue. Most of us are also reading or listening to audiobooks while we exercise, which means our weekly check-ins double as a low-key book recommendation engine.
So How Do I Join?
You join by showing up. That is genuinely it. There is no application, no waitlist, no membership card. Here is what showing up looks like in practice:
Step 1: Find the Weekly Check-In Post
Every Friday, one of the FitReaders hosts publishes a weekly check-in post on their blog. It usually has a title like “FitReaders Weekly Check-In: [Date]” and a place in the comments (or a linkup tool) for you to share your week.
Step 2: Comment with Your Week
Drop a comment that includes whatever you want to share about your week. That might be:
- A specific count: “5 walks, 12 miles total.”
- A vibe: “Got out three times this week, even when I did not feel like it.”
- A win: “First time back at the gym since the surgery.”
- An honest miss: “Rough week. One yoga video. Trying again next week.”
- What you are reading or listening to.
There is no minimum. There is no maximum. Whatever you did counts, and if you did not do anything, that counts too. The point is to keep the connection going.
Step 3: Cheer on Other Folks
This part is non-negotiable in spirit, even though no one is policing it. Read a few of the other comments and leave a quick “way to go!” on at least two or three. The community works because we show up for each other. That is the magic.
Step 4: Come Back Next Week
That is the entire onboarding flow. Come back next Friday. And the Friday after. Build the habit slowly.
Common Questions
What Counts as Exercise?
Everything. Walking, running, hiking, biking, swimming, yoga, Pilates, weightlifting, dance class, Zumba, water aerobics, gardening, mowing the lawn, chasing a toddler, cleaning the garage, raking leaves, pushing a stroller, swing dancing in the living room, treadmill miles while watching TV, stair-stepping during commercial breaks, chair yoga on a hard pain day. If you moved your body intentionally, it counts.
What If I Have an Injury or Chronic Illness?
Then you are extra welcome here. We have members managing fibromyalgia, recovering from surgery, dealing with chronic fatigue, working around mobility issues, in physical therapy, and recovering from cancer treatment. The bar is “did you move what you could today?” That is it.
Do I Have to Be a Book Blogger?
Nope. Most of us are bloggers or hang out on bookish social media, but you do not need a blog. If you are a reader who wants accountability, you are in.
Do I Need to Track Miles?
Not at all. Some of us are data nerds who track miles, steps, and minutes. Others just say “I went for a walk three times this week.” Both are valid.
Is There a Specific Goal I Need to Set?
No, but a lot of us find it helpful to set a personal monthly goal. Mine is usually something like “move my body at least four days a week” or “hit 50 miles walking this month.” Pick something that makes you feel good, not guilty.
What If I Miss a Week?
Come back the next week. The community is forgiving. Honestly, just owning that you had a rough week and showing up anyway is one of the most powerful things you can do.
What I Love About It
I have been part of FitReaders for years now, and the thing that keeps me coming back is how genuinely kind this group is. There is no diet talk. There is no body shaming. There is no “before and after” pressure. There is no comparing your week to anyone else’s. There is just a bunch of readers in different time zones cheering each other on for putting on our sneakers.
The other thing I love is how it has made me a more intentional listener. Pairing audiobooks with my walks turned into a habit, and now my fitness time and my reading time feed each other. I get more reading done because I walk, and I walk more because I want to find out what happens next.
Ready to Join?
If you have read this far, you are basically already in. Bookmark the most recent weekly check-in post, set a reminder for Friday, and drop your first comment. We will be glad you did.
